I’m Jackie Cangro.
I’m a veteran developmental editor, book coach, and workshop leader who helps dedicated fiction and narrative nonfiction writers shape stronger stories with clarity, confidence, and momentum.
My goal is for you to walk away with thoughtful feedback, a clear roadmap forward, and the confidence to stay firmly in the driver’s seat of your own work.
And the moments that make me proudest? They’re not just book deals or publication announcements—though I love celebrating those, too. It’s when a writer finally understands what their story has been trying to become. When revision clicks. When someone who felt stuck starts feeling excited about their manuscript again.

I am well versed editing most genres, but I gravitate toward romance, women’s fiction, book club/upmarket urban fantasy, and historical.
After spending twenty years in the YA division at Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, I have a special place in my heart for YA and MG!

That said, there are some types of writing I do not edit — poetry, textbook material, technical writing or scripts/screenplays.
I also don’t edit manuscripts with gratuitous violence against humans or animals.

Many writers find it helpful to get a developmental edit of the opening chapters so they can feel confident in moving forward. Some writers are looking for accountability as they draft.
I’m not able to review random sections (chapter 13 only, for example) if I’m not familiar with your story.

I usually book out about 1-3 months in advance, depending on the project type. (You get 100% of me here—I don’t subcontract, use AI or have you jump through hoops with a VA!)
I recommend reaching out about that far in advance too, especially if you have a hard deadline or an ideal timeframe in mind.

I send invoices through Stripe, and you can use a major credit card or bank transfer.
You’ll get an invoice for a 25 percent down payment to hold our schedule, 25 percent as I begin the project, and the balance upon completion.
FYI — You don’t need a Stripe account, and there are never any extra fees.

I do not use any AI platforms when editing or offering feedback. All of your work will be read by me and editorial reports will be written by me.
Your work will be treated with the highest ethical standards.

I don’t offer agent publisher searches. Check out Query Tracker, Publisher’s Marketplace or MSWL for listings of agents and publishers that might be suitable for your project.
