Editing Services

Need to get unbiased comments on your manuscript from a professional editor? Wondering if it’s ready for an agent/publisher? Whether you’re writing literary or genre fiction, short stories, or memoir/essays, I can help. I provide one-on-one manuscript editing services with honest, constructive feedback about what is working and what isn’t without a one-size-fits-all approach. I treat each manuscript as if it were my own, giving it the time and attention it deserves.

Literary agents see so many manuscripts that they can afford to pass on one that requires too much work, knowing that the next day’s e-mail will likely bring another, possibly in near-perfect shape. Many authors work with freelance editors to polish their material before querying agents or before self-publishing. In today’s competitive publishing arena, the need for polished and professional manuscripts has never been greater.

The Q’s and the A’s…

What are your specialties?

My fortes are literary fiction and narrative nonfiction (memoir and essay). I also have a lot of experience with suspense / thriller, mainstream and romance genres.

What type of work don’t you handle?

At this time I do not edit textbook material, technical writing or scripts/screenplays.

What is the first step?

Please fill out the form below with the following information, so I can get an idea of the type of project you’re working on:

Word count of complete project
Brief synopsis/description
Type of editing requested

List the different types of editing you do.

*Copyediting / Proofreading / Line Editing (e.g., grammar, spelling, paragraph and sentence structure, word use)
*Developmental (e.g., the big picture, such as flow/pacing, telling the story, characterization, structure, style)
*Critique / Evaluation

What about pricing and turnaround time?

My rates are by word count. There are no hidden charges. As long as you have fairly represented the scope of the project, the price will remain at the agreed-upon rate. Please fill out the form to get a quote.

I only work on one manuscript at a time so you’re project will have my undivided attention. Turnaround time is generally about 5 weeks, but this depends of the length and scope of the work, and what projects are in the queue ahead of yours. A specific time frame will be given before I begin the project.

What do I get back?

You’ll submit your manuscript via email attachment (Word/DOC or RTF attachment preferred). I’ll make edits using the track changes feature. Then I’ll return the manuscript to you via email. For content or developmental critique, you’ll also receive an in-depth report (usually about 5-7 pages) covering specifics like dialogue, characterization, etc.

What are my payment options?

I accept payments through PayPal, through which you can use a major credit card or bank transfer. I ask for a downpayment as I begin the project with the balance upon completion. If you’re not in the US (where I am), no worries – PayPal makes any necessary currency conversions.

I don’t have the entire manuscript finished. Will you edit a partial manuscript?

Sure. Many writers find it helpful to get a partial critique – usually an outline and the first 10,000 words. I will provide an in-depth report which you can use to guide your writing or revisions of the rest.

Is my submission confidential?

In short, yes. Your work will be treated with the highest ethical standards. I will not show your work to anyone else without your permission.  I don’t keep copies of your work or my comments of your work after my services are completed.

Can you help me find an agent or publisher?

No. That’s really out of my area of expertise. Check out The Association of Authors’ Representatives, Publisher’s Marketplace or the Writer’s Market for listings of agents and publishers that might be suitable for your project.

I have another question. How can I reach you?

Please drop me a line and we can chat about what options might best suit you.

Kind Words

I am proud to have a growing list of satisfied clients.

Jackie’s not just a writer or editor. She’s a reader. And the sort of reader who reminds a writer that his duty is to the reader first and to his own hangups and sacred moo-cows second. She knows that stories have starts and ends and the good ones have peaks and valleys and buckets of conflict. She also gives it to you straight–without making you feel like a complete idiot…Every writer should be lucky enough to have someone like her around.
